According to figures released by Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinians have died while detained since October 2023. A human rights group operating from Israel has indicated that the true number is likely significantly larger, because of numerous of missing people originating in Gaza.

Non-Combatant Fatalities

Restricted official information shows that the largest portion of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who lost their lives in detention were non-combatants, according to a simultaneous examination.

During May of this year, a military intelligence database tracking all fighters in Gaza, a roster of more than 47,000 named individuals, listed just 21 fatalities in detention. At that time, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had perished in prison.

Detention Conditions

Prominent Examples

Certain fatalities in custody have been widely reported, including a senior healthcare leader who lost his life in detention after four months in detention.

A detainee incarcerated with the victim reported that he was led to the courtyard by correctional officers just prior to his death, obviously hurt and unclothed from the waist down. His remains remains unreleased to Gaza.

Other prisoners who died in Israeli custody remain anonymous. Detention administrators and armed services gave analysts with the figure of deaths in custody, and limited further data such as the facility where they perished, but without the inmates’ personal details.

Identification Challenges
