At least thirteen people killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
